Athens 'Bank Marked' Tetradrachm
Silver, 17.03 grams; 25.61 mm. Circa 449 - 413 B.C. Obverse: Head of Athena right wearing crested helmet ornamented with three olive leaves. Reverse: AQE, Owl standing right, head facing in erect posture; the tail feathers represented together as a single prong; olive sprig at top left. BMC 11; GCV 2526. Good fine with bankers test nicks and strikes on the obverse and reverse to ensure that this was not counterfeit.

During the period 449 - 413 B.C. huge quantities of these famous Athenian owl tetradrachms were minted to finance grandiose building projects such as the Parthenon and to cover the costs of the long drawn Peloponnesian War.
