| Excellent Anglo Scandinavian 'Face' Cloisonné Brooch Copper alloy, 7.21 grams; 27.33 mm. Circa late 10th Century A.D. A stunning gilt bronze brooch with a cloisonné inlay of dark blue, white and yellow in the form of a face. Around the circumference are seven projections, five of them still with their inlays of blue 'jewels'. This distinctive type of brooch was produced in England during the late 10th and 11th Centuries. At first it was believed that these were late Roman in origin but it is now recognized that they are late 10th century. Cloisonné work was reintroduced to Britain via Germanic and Byzantine art.
