Oliver Cromwell 'Commemorative' Medal
Copper alloy, 19.86 grams; 36.74 mm. A medal commemorating the death of Oliver Cromwell by Jean Dassier. Obverse: laureate, draped bust facing left. Legend: OLIVARIUS CROMWELL. Reverse: a tomb decorated with the arms of Cromwell surmounted by a helmet between branches of palm and laurel; the side is inscribed: ANGLIAE . SCO . ET HIB . PROTECTOR (Protector of England, Scotland and Ireland); four putti, one points to Cromwell's titles, a second holds a mirror indicating prudence and is weeping over his death, typified by a skull. Another represents his success by a laurel wreath and the unanimity of the kingdom by a bundle of wands bound together. A fourth, as Hercules, symbolizes his power by the club and the fruits of his labors by three apples (the three kingdoms). MI I 435/87, Eimer 203. An interesting find.

Duke of Cumberland 'Extinguished Rebellion' Medallion
Pewter, 14.32 grams; 34.84 mm. 1746 A.D. Struck to commemorate to Victory of the Battle of Culloden against Bonny Prince Charlie who lead to Jacobite rebellion to restore the House of Stuart to the throne, The Duke of Cumberland, Son of George II was victorious and crushed the rebellion in less than an hour in the bloody battle that earned him the name ‘Butcher’ Cumberland. The Obverse shows the Duke on Horseback advancing left, holding sword above him with DUKE OF CUMBER around. Reverse: Bonny Prince Charlie, the young pretender climbing plinth in pursuit of the English crown at the top with the Duke of Cumberland behind pulling him back, [ ]BACK AGAIN around. Ref: Similar examples in Jettons, Medalets and Tokens of the British Isles Circa 1558 - 1830 A.D., Page 1731, No examples with this reverse. Probably an unpublished variety. Extremely Rare and Very Fine with repair.

Pewter, 9.26 grams; 37.34 mm. 1742 A.D. Obverse: THE BRITISH GLORY REVIV D BY ADM L VERNON AND COMR BROWN, Full length figures of Admiral Vernon and Commodore Brown shaking hands, crown above and ship below. MAKE ROOM FOR SIR ROBERT, The devil, horned and bearded, leading Walpole by a rope around his neck, towards the gaping jaws of Hades. In exergue NO EXCISE. Ref: Examples in Jetons, Medalets and Tokens of the British Isles Circa 1558 - 1830 Vol. 3 by Michael Mitchiner, Page 1731, Fig. 5057. Edge loss, otherwise Very Fine and Excessively Rare. Found York.
