Imitations of English pennies were made in several areas of Europe in the medieval period. They vary from almost exact copies of the English originals to examples, like this one, bearing the name and titles of their issuer and the local mint name. Their origin stems from the legal requirement that transactions in England must be made in English currency. European merchants found it more economic for copies of the English coins to be minted locally than to pay English exchange fees to convert their own coinage on arrival. In addition, English coins were minted to a high standard of purity (sterling silver) whereas many European imitations have a much lower silver content, reflecting the general European standards for the local denier coinages. The illegal circulation of these imitations in England, occurring due to the generally poor standards of literacy among the population, was the subject of several English prohibitions. | £120.00 | |
