English 'Opposing Birds' Latten Counter
Lead alloy, 0.58 grams, 16.38 mm. Circa late 14th - early 15th Century. Obverse: A well executed design depicting two birds facing with a long cross in centre. Reverse: A plain wide voided cross, angles hatched. Michael Mitchiner has no examples of this type in his work: 'The Medieval Period and Nuremberg. Holed in centre for 'stringing', Very Fine.

English Pewter Counters are dated to the late 14th and early 15th Centuries and were an interim phenomenon of transient manufacture after the English market in stock latten jettons became flooded with cheap mass produced Continental products in the second half of the 14th century.
