Cruciform Brooch 010404
Unique Anglo Saxon Giant 'Transitional Type' Brooch
Copper alloy, 160 grams; 181.52 mm, 7.16 inches. Circa 6th Century A.D. A huge stunning transitional type brooch based on the cruciform and square headed brooches. The head of the brooch has three wings; each one has two birds heads facing outwards supporting flat panels above which are decorated with sheet silver. The design within the head is made up from a boarder of vertical lines enclosing several sections of lines and shapes, these continue into the bow of the brooch which is short with a shallow arch. The top section of the foot plate is large and square with two lappets covered in sheet silver, inside the square there are three panels; the middle section displays a small bordered panel detailed with what is possibly an entwined beast, the two outer panels are detailed with the same stylized design. The foot plate moulding is in the form of a face mask with large looping ears, below the head is a large triangular section flanked by two large eyed beasts facing outwards with mouths open; the mouths are detailed with sheet silver. Inside the triangular section there is a stylized design with a small boarder that connects with the foot terminal; this is also covered in sheet silver. This type of brooch is unpublished in any of the leading Anglo Saxon research publications. Unique and in extremely fine condition. Found Lincolnshire.
