Cunobelin 010254

Cunobelin 010254
Rare Cunobelin 'Plastic Type' Gold Stater Core/Bronze Double Unit
Bronze, 4.47 grams; 19.20 mm. Circa 20-43 AD. Obverse: corn ear with central stalk dividing CA MV. Reverse: romanized horse left with CVNO below. Celtic Coin Index Registration Number at Oxford University: CCI 08.8905. VA. 2029-3. Very fine. Found Buckinghamshire.

Dr John Sills of the Celtic Coin Index at Oxford University writes: “There are several plated Cunobelin staters with an identical left-facing horse on the reverse different from that on the genuine coins; there's an outside chance they are double units struck in bronze but this is highly speculative and it's more likely they are blundered forgeries”.
