Cunobelin Celt1
Cunobelin Celt1
RARE Cunobelin 'Hercules' Silver Unit
Silver, 1.24 grams, 12.14 mm. Circa 20-30 A.D. Obverse: Hercules standing right, CV-NO either side. Reverse: Women rides side saddle, TASCIOVA below. M 239; VA 2061; BMC 1884-1885; S 317. Celtic Coin Index Registration Number at Oxford University: CCI 07.0812. Some surface errosion, Good fine/almost very fine. Found Essex. An interesting story on this type: thought to be a naked lady riding a feline whilst feeding it with one raised hand. This is thought to be a twisted Celtic story on 'Europa & the Bull'.

Dr. Philip De Jersey writes: "One of Cunobelin's Tasciovanus types, usually found in the western part of his territory. Still quite rare, with about 30 recorded. Date c. 20-30 AD."
