Norman 'Type V' Penny Brooch
Silver gilt, 1.60 grams; 20.32 mm. A Norman penny of Henry I, 1100-1135 A.D. Gilded and contemporaneously made into a high status brooch (repaired). The coin is a rare Henry I type V, with a voided cross and fleur in each angle, ALFWINE at Gloucester. Believed only example of this moneyer in this class. Class VI at Gloucester is also only known by a single recorded example from a 'lattern' brooch according to JJ North. Normal type with common moneyer books at £1,500.00 in Very Fine (Coins of England 2005). A stunning piece of Norman history. Ex. an old collection not found in the UK.
