On the flat part, which forms the seal, is a depiction of a bull advancing left after a bird. This is a typical Phoenician seal showing the interconnectedness with Egyptian culture. Very Fine condition. Ex. Old London collection. SOLD

Around the beginning of the first millennium B.C., Phoenician seal engravers adopted the use of the scarab, an Egyptian symbol of regeneration. In typical Phoenician fashion, the seals were decorated with Egyptian motifs that are juxtaposed out of context, sometimes with non-Egyptian animal subjects. Popular subjects included the birth of Horus and scenes of his mother Isis nursing him as an infant. Winged protective deities and genies were also favorite themes. Iconographically, the seals of the eighth to seventh centuries B.C. have a close dependence on Phoenician carved bowls and ivories. Phoenician scarab seals reached a peak of popularity in the fifth to fourth centuries B.C., when they spread throughout the Mediterranean. The city of Tharros on Sardinia was a major center of production and distribution. By this time, the seals were carved with not only Egyptian themes but also Etruscan and western Greek imagery.

Ancient and yet always at the height of current fashion: that is Turquoise. A common belief held that turquoise possessed prophylactic qualities such as protecting wearer from untoward forces and it was thought to change the colour with the wearer's health. This gemstone has for thousands of years been appreciated as a holy stone, a good-luck-charm or a talisman and was among the first gemstones to be mined. The oldest proof for this lies in Egyptian tombs from the period around 3000 B.C. Ancient Egyptians mined turquoise at the Wadi Maghara mines, on the Sinia Peninsula.

Originally, in the Ogdoad system, he was god of the underworld, and his name is frequently thought to have reflected this, meaning something like putrefaction. He was said to have a wife, Anput (who was really just his female aspect, her name being his with an additional feminine suffix: the t), who was depicted exactly the same, though feminine. He is also both listed to have taken to wife the feminine form of Neheb Kau, Nehebka, and Kebauet. Kebauet, the Goddess of cold water, is also listed as his daughter in some places. His father was originally said to be Ra, as he was the creator god, and thus his mother was said to be Hesat, Ra's wife, who later was identified as Hathor (to whom her identity was remarkably similar). As the god of death, Anubis was identified as the father of Kebechet, the goddess of the purification of bodily organs due to be placed in canopic jars during mummification.

The New Kingdom saw notorious royal persons like Ahmose I, Ahmose Nefertari, Seti I and Ramesses II leave their marks here with temples and cenotaphs. Under Akhenaten´s short rule (1372-1354 BC) the cult of Wesir temporarily lost in importance but in the 19th Dynasty, Seti I and his son Ramesses II began to restore Abedjou to its former glory. The most impressive of these buildings is the Temple of Seti I, dedicated to himself and a line of deities; Osiris, Isis, Ptah-Sokar, Re-Horakhty, Horus and Nefertem. Also the Temple of Ramesses II, which he built after Seti´s death, bear witness of great artistic achievements and of the renewed strength of the cult of Osiris. It seems Abedjou still remained the goal for pilgrimage and celebrations by kings and commoners alike during this period.

In Egyptian mythology, Sekhmet, was originally the war goddess of Upper Egypt, although when the first Pharaoh of the 12th dynasty moved the capital of Egypt to Memphis, her cult centre moved as well. It was said that her breathe created the desert. She was also known by some cults to be a daughter of the ancient sun god, Ra. As Lower Egypt had been conquered by Upper Egypt, Sekhmet was seen as the more vicious of the two war goddesses, the other, Bast, being the war goddess of Lower Egypt. Consequently it was Sekhmet who was seen as the Avenger of Wrongs, and Scarlet Lady, a reference to blood. As the one with bloodlust, she was also seen as ruling over menstruation. SOLD

Horus, represented by the falcon, was the son of gods Isis and Osiris. The Kings of Egypt associated themselves with Horus and the hieroglyph, which represented the idea of God, was a falcon on its perch. A sun god, Horus was superior both physically and socially, representing the King and linking the sun and the moon, the two primary celestial beings. Horus was worshipped throughout Egypt, and so many cults proliferated that many myths sprang up associated with Horus. Throughout ancient Egyptian history, this god was personally identified with the king, as each succeeding pharaoh used the name of Horus as the first of his titles. SOLD

Bes, like many other Egyptian Gods, went through many metamorphoses in his history. As Bes' cult was never official, and he never had dedicated temples or priests, the details of the particular deity are even more difficult to trace. Researches such as Richard Wilkinson believe that in its later inceptions Bes was a grand general term encompassing up to ten weaker deities - Aha, Amam, the earlier Bes, Hayet, Ihty, Mefdjet, Menew, Segeb, Sopdu and Tetenu. And as those minor deities became associated with Bes, the greater Bes was also becoming associated with the even greater set of protective deities such as Amun, Min, Horus, Sopdu, Reshef, and others.

Mythologically, Bes was most often linked to Horus, even creating a merged single deity, Horbes. To complicate matters, in the hellenic era, the feminine form of Bes' name - Beset - became considered a deity in its own right as Bes' wife, and owing to the Horus association, Beset was sometimes thought of as Horus' mother.

Ancient Egyptian 'Scarab Wing' Mummy Fittings.

Gold, 2.28 grams; 76.88 mm; 2.52 grams; 74.31 mm. Two large gold repousse mummy fitting with three stitching holes for attachment to the outer wrappings in each. A wonderful decorative pair of 'Scarab Wings' in perfect condition. A spectacular focal point to any display of small ancient Egyptian antiquities. A pair of very rare objects from a retired London collector. SOLDEmbalmers were given the task to preserve the deceased. Not only did their job require knowledge of human anatomy, they also had to perform rituals at several stages during the process. It is noteworthy that the Egyptians themselves considered embalming so sacred and secret that no record of the process comes from them but only from foreign observers. Soon after a person died, their body was rushed to the embalmer to prevent early decay. A typical mummification took 70 days in which craftsmen raced to finish the tomb.

The first step in Egyptian mummification was the removal of all internal organs which are prone to rapid decay. The brain was removed by breaking the bone at the end of the nose with a chisel and inserting a special hook up the nostrils and into the skull. The hook was swished around, breaking down the brain. The now-liquified brain was poured out of the skull through the nose by tipping the head to its side. Embalmers also removed the stomach, liver, lungs and intestines through a small incision on the left side of the abdomen. According to Herodotus, the man whose job it was to cut the incision was then chased away, for it was thought that the human body was sacred and it was a crime to harm it. The heart was left in place because it was thought to be the centre of the body. The organs which were removed from the abdomen were stored in so called canopic jars, modelled after the four sons of Horus, who would protect the organs, and place them in the tomb during the burial ritual. It was believed the person would need these organs to live in the afterlife. Because the function of the brain was not known at the time, it was discarded. In later dynasties, the abdominal organs were treated and wrapped and returned to the body, but unused canopic jars continued to be placed into tombs. The body was then washed with palm wine. Because of its high alcohol content, it would kill much of the bacteria that had already begun to reproduce.

Next, all moisture would be removed from the body by inserting linen-wrapped pouches of natron (a type of salt found on the banks of Lake Wadi Natrun) into the abdominal cavity through the incision. The rest of the body was then covered with natron and left in the heat. The result was a dried-out, but recognizable body. The abdominal incision was then covered with a metal plate bearing the Eye of Horus (wedjat) which symbolically healed it. Finally, the body was wrapped in large amounts of linen, some of which contained spells to help the deceased in their passage to the afterlife. After several stages of wrapping, the body would also be coated in warm resin, before wrapping was continued. The coatings of resin would ensure that the linen wrappings stayed in place. The resins likely included frankincense and myrrh. To further protect the deceased, magical amulets were placed on specific parts of the body between the layers of wrappings.

Several species of the dung beetle, most notably the Scarabaeus sacer (often referred to as scarab), enjoyed a sacred status among the ancient Egyptians. Some scholars suggest that the people's practice of making a mummy was inspired by the brooding process of the beetle.

The hieroglyphic image of the beetle is believed to represent a trilateral phonetic that Egyptologists transliterate as xpr or ?pr and translate as "to come into being", "to become" or "to transform". The derivative term xprw or ?pr(w) is variously translated as "form", "transformation", "happening", "mode of being" or "what has come into being" depending on the context. It may have existential, fictional, or ontologic significance.

Moreover, the dung ball rolled by a dung beetle resembles the sun. Many authors suggest that the ancient Egyptians believed that Khepri renewed the sun every day before rolling it above the horizon, then carried it through the other world after sunset, only to renew it, again, the next day. Some New Kingdom royal tombs exhibit a threefold image of the sun god, with the beetle as symbol of the morning sun. The astronomical ceiling in the tomb of Ramses VI portrays the nightly "death" and "rebirth" of the sun as being swallowed by Nut, goddess of the sky, and re-emerging from her womb as Khepri.

The scarab was linked to Khepri ("he who has come into being"), the god of the setting sun. The ancients believed that the dung beetle was only male in gender, and reproduced by depositing semen into a dung ball. The supposed self-creation of the beetle resembles that of Khepri, who creates himself out of nothing.

The image of the scarab, conveying ideas of transformation, renewal, and resurrection, is ubiquitous in ancient Egyptian religious and funerary art.

Excavations of ancient Egyptian sites have yielded images of the scarab in bone, ivory, stone, Egyptian faience, and precious metals, dating from the Sixth Dynasty and up to the period of Romahn rule. They are generally small, bored to allow stringing on a necklace, and the base bears a brief inscription or cartouche. Some have been used as seals. Pharaohs sometimes commissioned the manufacture of larger images with lengthy inscriptions, such as the commemorative scarab of Queen Tiye. Massive sculptures of scarabs can be seen at Luxor Temple, at the Serapeum in Alexandria (see Serapis) and elsewhere in Egypt.

The scarab was of prime significance in the funerary cult of ancient Egypt. Scarabs, generally, though not always, were cut from green stone, and placed on the chest of the deceased. Perhaps the most famous example of such "heart scarabs" is the yellow-green pectoral scarab found among the entombed provisions of Tutankhamen. It was carved from a large piece of Libyan desert glass. The purpose of the "heart scarab" was to ensure that the heart would not bear witness against the deceased at judgement in the Afterlife. Other possibilities are suggested by the "transformation spells" of the Coffin Texts, which affirm that the soul of the deceased may transform (xpr) into a human being, a god, or a bird and reappear in the world of the living.

In contrast to funerary contexts, some of ancient Egypt's neighbors adopted the scarab motif for seals. The best-known of these being Judean LMLK seals (8 of 21 designs contained scarab beetles), which were used exclusively to stamp impressions on storage jars during the reign of Hezekiah.

The scarab remains an item of popular interest thanks to modern fascination with the art and beliefs of ancient Egypt. Scarab beads in semiprecious stones or glazed ceramics can be purchased at most bead shops, while at Luxor Temple a massive ancient scarab has been roped off to discourage visitors from rubbing the base of the statue "for luck".

Publius Aelius Traianus Hadrianus (January 24, 76 - July 10, 138), known as Hadrian in English, was Roman emperor from 117-138, and a member of the gens Aelia. Hadrian was the third of the "Five Good Emperors". He was, according to Elizabeth Speller, the first emperor whose assessment moved beyond the stereotype of good and bad emperors. His reign has a faltering beginning, a glorious middle, and a tragic conclusion. Hadrian was born in Italica, Baetica (originally Hispania Ulterior), to a well-established settler family which had originated in Picenum in Italy. He was a distant relative of his predecessor Trajan being a grandson of Trajan's father's sister. Trajan never officially designated a successor, but, according to his wife, Plotina, Trajan named Hadrian emperor immediately before his death. However, Trajan's wife was well-disposed toward Hadrian, and he may well have owed his succession to her.
