Mr Jim Halliday of York Museum PAS writes: "The eye sockets still hold their blue glass beads…two articles have appeared in the Searcher Magazine dated December 1995 and November 1996, written by J Shaffery a researcher into Limoges Crucifixes and other types of religious artefacts…he was of the opinion that it is one of the group of multi-purpose saintly figures used to decorate caskets, shrines and crucifixes. From the collection of John Chapman, found by Ricky McGeachy who unbelievably threw it away as being of no value".

Our Lady of Walsingham is a title used for the Blessed Virgin Mary. The title derives from belief that Mary appeared in a vision to Richeldis de Faverches, a devout Saxon noblewoman, in 1061 in the village of Walsingham in Norfolk, England. In passing on his guardianship of the Holy House, Richeldis's son Geoffrey left instructions for the building of a priory in Walsingham. The priory passed into the care of Canons Regular sometime between 1146 and 1174.The Holy House, containing the simple wooden structure Richeldis had been asked to build in imitation of the home in which the Annunciation occurred, became both a shrine and the focus of pilgrimage to Walsingham. By the time of its destruction in 1538 the shrine had become one of the greatest religious centres in England, together with Glastonbury and Canterbury. Royal patronage helped the shrine to grow in wealth and popularity, receiving visits from Henry III, Edward II, Edward III, Henry IV, Edward IV, Henry VII and Henry VIII.

At the time of the English Reformation, following the Catholic revolt known as the Pilgrimage of Grace, the English court began to see Roman Catholicism not simply from a religious point of view, but rather as treason against the state. The fear of another revolt was strongly felt by Henry VIII. This fear caused him to target as "superstitious" any religious practices that brought together large numbers of people. For this reason, he banned pilgrimages, saints' days, and the display of relics. Late in 1538, the king's soldiers sacked the priory at Walsingham and destroyed the shrine as well, burning everything that could not be resold. Two monks were executed. The shrine of Thomas Becket, and most others through out the kingdom, saw the same fate at that time.

The Jew's harp, jaw harp, or mouth harp is thought to be one of the oldest musical instruments in the world; a musician apparently playing it can be seen in a Chinese drawing from the 3rd century B.C. Medieval Crucifix Pendant 01~
RARE Medieval 'Inscribed Crucifix' Pendant. Copper ally, 5.14 grams, 46.36 mm. Circa 15th Century A.D. A rare and most intriguing pendant in the form of a crucifix. Either side of the crucifix are two spears or lances, a reference to the spear of destiny used by longinus to stab Jesus to guarantee he was dead. Very Rare and Extremely Fine condition on this important religious relic.

According to legend, the Holy Lance (also known as the Spear of Destiny, Holy Spear, Lance of Longinus, Spear of Longinus or Spear of Christ) is the lance that pierced Jesus while he was on the cross. The lance is mentioned only in the Gospel of John (19:31-37) and not in any of the Synoptic Gospels. The gospel states that the Romans planned to break Jesus' legs, a practice known as crurifragium, which was a method of hastening the death during a crucifixion. Just before they did so, they realized he was already dead and that there was no reason to break his legs. To make sure he was dead, Longinus, a Roman soldier, stabbed him.

... but one of the soldiers pierced his side with a lance, and immediately there came out blood and water. John 19:34

The Yorkist badge was the famous Sun of York and consisted of the white rose of York set within a sunburst. All of Edward of York’s troops would have worn this on their clothes. At the Battle of Barnet in 1471 the Yorkists did battle with the Lancastrians. Amongst whom was Edward de Vere Earl of Oxford. The Yorkist conquest of the Lancastrians in 1461 did not put an end to the Wars of the Roses, which rumbled on until the start of the sixteenth century. Family disloyalty in the form of Richard III's betrayal of his nephews, the young King Edward V and his brother, was part of his downfall. Henry Tudor, a claimant to the throne of Lancastrian descent, defeated Richard III in battle and Richard was killed. .

Michael Mitchener writes: "[An associated Knightly Order was] The Knights Hospitallers of Saint John of Jerusalem who were expelled from Rhodes by the Turks in 1522. A few years later they were granted the Island of Malta by the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, and took possession in 1530."

The Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, which then had both ecclesiastical and military aspects, had its origins in the successful conclusion of the First Crusade and the establishment of the Kingdom of Jerusalem in 1099. The ecclesiastical role was evidenced by the Latin Patriarch - an office first founded by the Council of Chalcedon in 451 - and the Regular Canons of the Holy Sepulchre of St Augustine, who were established by Gibelin of Sabran, Archbishop of Arles and Arnulf de Roher, the Patriarch, in 1114.

The military role was initiated by the election as leader of the First Crusade of Godfrey de Bouillon, who led his men to victory in Jerusalem on July 15th 1099. Godfrey accepted the title of Protector of the Holy Sepulchre. He died in July 1100 and was succeeded by his brother Baudoin, or Baldwin I, as King. This new leader laid the foundations of the kingdom and established its main institutions on the Norman-French pattern as a centralised feudal state. He drew up the first Constitution of the chivalric Order in 1103, under which the Patriarch appointed Knights in Jerusalem at the direct service of the Crown.

The Kingdom existed for 200 years, reaching its zenith under Baldwin III (1143-1162), but suffered defeat at the hands of Saladin in 1187 at the battle of Hattin, and the Knights were finally driven out of the Holy Land at the siege of Acre in 1291.

With the dispersal of the Knights of all the Orders from the Holy Land, the Holy Sepulchre Order of Knighthood declined in strength and struggled to continue. It no longer had a natural leader and the Patriarch was in exile.

The Regular Canons of the Holy Sepulchre of St Augustine fared somewhat better. Priories were established all over Europe - as many as 2000 at one time - and there were convents of Canonesses in Germany, the Low Countries, Spain and England, of which the Canonesses of New Hall in Essex still survive.

Pope Pius IX restored the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem in 1847. At the same time, with the Bull Nulla celebrior, the Pope gave new life to the Order by entrusting it with the primary task of supporting the activities of the newly restored Patriarchate. The Statute governing the Order has been modified several times over the years and was approved in 1996 by Pope John Paul II after its latest revision. Its charitable purpose remains unchanged: to provide a regular support of prayer and work for the Christian communities in the Holy Land, a task that has become essential in recent decades as a way to stem the emigration of Palestinian families, particularly among the Christians.

At an audience for members of the Order during their Jubilee Pilgrimage to Rome in 2000, Pope John Paul II said, "Your Equestrian Order, which began a few centuries ago as an 'Honour Guard' for the care of Our Lord's Holy Sepulchre, has enjoyed the particular attention of the Roman Pontiffs. It was Pope Pius IX, of venerable memory, who in 1847 reconstituted it in order to encourage the re-establishment of a Catholic faith community in the Holy Land. This great Pope restored your original function but with a significant difference: the custody of Christ's tomb would no longer depend on the force of arms, but on the value of a constant witness and solidarity towards Christians residing in the Holy Places. This is still your task today. May the Holy Year, which is a time for personal and community conversion, see each of you intent on fostering and deepening the three characteristic virtues of the Order: zeal for self-denial in this society of affluence, generous commitment to the weak and defenceless, and a courageous struggle for justice and peace."

The mace was a popular weapon of the medieval age and has a more remote antiquity than any other weapon. The earliest form of this weapon commenced in the Stone Age alongside the war club and eventually evolved through the Bronze Age and the Iron Age. It was in use by the Egyptians, Assyrians and throughout the east and developed into the style we recognize now. A metal spiked ball upon a shaft with grip. By the 15th Century, armour had become so well developed that it was almost impervious to a sword cut and even a thrust. So heavy maces which evolved from man's oldest weapon, the club, could make short work of that armour With a few full sound blows the best of plate would be so damaged that the wearer's movement would be greatly impaired, and that lead quickly to defeat.
