'La Tene'
Sword
. Celtic 'La Tene' Sword. Iron, 355 grams, 27 inches. Circa 300 B.C. Dating to the 4th Century B.C. 'La Tene' period this sword is in remarkably good condition. Still complete with the 'nut' which would have held the pommel which was have been fashioned from wood (decomposition in antiquity) to the tang. At the tang the sword expands to form the long blade which has a single cutting edge which tapers to a point, running down the center of the blade is a blood ridge, this is to ensure an easy withdrawal after stabbing an enemy. Iron swords became increasingly common from the 6th century BC. The Hittites, the Mycenaean Greeks, and the Proto-Celtic Hallstatt culture figured among the early users of iron swords. Iron has the advantage of mass-production due to the wider availability of the raw material. Early iron swords were not comparable to later steel blades; being brittle, they were even inferior to well-manufactured bronze weapons, but the easier production, and the better availability of the raw material for the first time permitted the equipment of entire armies with metal weapons, though Bronze Age Egyptian armies were at times fully equipped with bronze weapons. Very Fine condition and professionally restored.
This item was purposely bent in antiquity and thrown as an offering into water.
