Corieltauvi Celtic Coins for Sale

The Coritani/Corieltavi/Corieltauvi tribal capital was Ratae Corieltavorvm located in Leicester. Their territory included Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire, and part of South Yorkshire. Coinage was usually struck by two or three rulers at once. The Coritani were not a unified tribe, but a collection of like-minded people sharing the same outlook and social practices.

Gold, 1.45 grams; 17.97 mm. Circa 1st century BC. Obverse: stylized boar facing left. Reverse: Large S symbol with pellets and pellet in ring motifs around. Celtic Coin Index Registration Number at Oxford University: CCI 08.8886. S 395: BMC 3187-93. Extremely fine, rare to find in undamaged condition.

Dr John Sills of the Celtic Coin Index at Oxford University writes: "Unusual to find a complete example of this fragile type with no edge chips. As with the early staters there are left- and right- facing types; this one is the left-facing boar type; around 50 examples known in total."

Reverse: Horse left, elaborate curve above a ring and double pellet above horse resembling a crested helmet. Coin Index Registration Number at Oxford University: CCI 08.8809. M 405 - 406; VA 864; BMC 3213; S 396 variant. This is the earliest extant Corieltauvian type because it conforms closest to the denarii of C.f. Hostidius Geta, the horse is derived from the imported diademed type of C. 65 - 50 B.C. Very fine-good very fine. Found Lincolnshire.
