Steelyard Weight
. Copper alloy, 255 grams; 84.77 mm. Circa 13th Century A.D. It is of a pointed globular shape, it terminates with a double collar surmounted by a loop for suspension. Below is a hole so it could be filled with lead. This example is undecorated and has no traces of lead, possibly was to be decorated but left unfinished as a result of loss or death.

. Copper alloy, 4.39 grams; 15.42 mm. Circa 15th Century A.D. A uniface weight with an crude early crown, in centre a recess. After the Act of 1494-5 [11 Hen.7 c. 4] decreed that standard weights such as this were to be delivered to the county towns of every county in a new attempt to implement the aims of the Magna Carta. The officers of 'all cities' boroughs and market towns made copies of these standard weights, and to use them to check the weights used by merchants within their localities. If the weights were correct they were marked with a crown and the lombardic letter h, and no other weights were to be used.
