Aethelstan I~
Aethelstan I (A.D. 825 - 840)

There appears to be no documentary reference to this King, apart from his extensive coinage which runs to six types. It is in 825 that the Chronicles record that the 'king of the East Angles' sought the protection of Ecgberht, the king of the West Saxons, the East Angles always having had a raw deal from their Mercian masters, any revolts being suppressed with some brutality. This entry does not specify the king's name. Ecgberht does have a son Aethelstan, who became under-king of Kent in 839, but he may have just been old enough in 825 to be one and the same, 'though he would have to have been a replacement of the king mentioned.
