The tang which would have originally been imbedded within a wooden or bone handle expands from one side, leaving the flat cutting edge with the blade widening the further it gets the tip, before a hooked curvature to the point. Very Fine condition. SOLD
The Scramasax is a European bladed weapon, vaguely resembling a butcher knife or a machete. Its blade is gently curving, usually tapering to a point, sometimes sporting a false edge on the back up to a third of the whole length.
The total length could range from as little as half a foot (150 mm) to a full yard (910 mm).
The name 'sax' stems from the Germanic word 'sahs', designating a knife or blade. The tribe of the Saxons, who customarily carried this type of weapon, took their name from it. It was also worn by Lombard warriors as a tool, a last resort weapon, and sign of rank from the 4th century AD to the 9th century AD, and was probably well known to many other Germanic tribes around Europe too

There are extant contemporary descriptions of some Anglo-Saxon battles. Of particular relevance are the poems recounting the battles of Brunanburh, fought in 937 C.E. and Maldon, fought in 991 C.E. In the literature, most of the references to weapons and fighting concern the use of the thrown spear.

'Style I'
Sword Scabbard Mount
. Gold chip carved copper alloy, extent - 80 mm tip to tip [3 1/4 inches]; 31.16 grams. Circa 550 - 570 A.D. An extremely large lozenge shaped scabbard top mount with a wonderful gold chip carved design. The design is around a smaller central lozenge, and is a late style I. The finely executed design depicts two beads facing each other with entwining bodies. The upward tilting heads are represented by a three ridged curve at the top, a central pellet eye and curved bottom jaw. The body of each beast takes the form of a double scrollwork loop, each of which angles back at 90 degrees to form the legs: the foreleg lies parallel to the bottom edge and the hind leg lies parallel to the top edge. Recorded with the Portable Antiquities Scheme on reference number BH 9E8934 by
Julian Watters who writes:
"The decoration is a finely executed example of late Style I scrollwork, which dates the piece the 500 - 570 A.D. No parallel could be found for this piece, but the decoration is reminiscent of that seen on great square head brooches of the period"
Bent as a result of post depositional processes. Cleaned and conserved at Verulamium museum, St. Albans. Found Bedfordshire 2006.
Accompanied by a copy of the museum report and professional drawings.

'Godmanchester Pendant'
is an extremely high status
UNIQUE
early 6th Century object of Anglo-Scandinavian/Germanic origin. The object is circular, with a smaller, integral loop at the top. It is possibly a female clasp of an unknown form, or else a pendant. Around the edge five of originally seven pierced projecting lobes remain, three with decorative ball-headed rivets. The central ornamentation is in the form of a deep chip-carved 'swastika' with scroll ends running anticlockwise in a

round a hollow central lozenge. The border is decorated with a milled ridge that is punched with closely spaced, double dots. There is a tear in the left-hand part of the disk where the decoration has perforated it. The ancestry of the craftsman that produced this
'WORK OF ART'
remains uncertain as the form is to date unparalleled in both Anglo-Saxon England and Scandinavia. The
'Godmanchester Pendant'
is
'English Treasure'

'Godmanchester Pendant'
is an extremely high status

early 6th Century object of Anglo-Scandinavian/Germanic origin.

The

SOLD
Dr B. M. Ager (Department of Prehistory & Europe, British Museum) writes:
"...the form of the pendant is unusual, the style of the border and scrolled swastika motif are typically found on the jewellery of the 5th and early 6th centuries from southwest Scandinavia and Anglo-Saxon England. The anticlockwise swastika occurs, for example, on the foot-plates of a pair of silver-gilt, square-headed brooches of the early 6th century from Barrington, Cambs".
Dr Martin Rundkvist (Stockholm Museum) writes:
"I have never seen anything like it [the form] from Scandinavia. The chip-carved swastika is as Dr Ager states typical for 5th century...this style was popular all over Europe -- it is after all typical of the Migration Period"
