'Cult Wagon'
Celtic Wheel
. Copper alloy, 61 grams; 72.70 mm. Circa 7th Century B.C. A large wheel with eight spokes, from one of the extraordinary ‘cult wagons’ similar to the one excavated from a grave at Strettweg, Austria. This would have been one of four wheels on a wagon adorned with Celtic gods holding their arms up to a surmounting bowl.

. Extremely Rare and in Very Fine condition. Found west of Lyons, France.

Chris Rudd, Celtic Specialist writes:
“This is not a piece of ‘wheel money’ (rouelle) and not a votive wheel; its large size and protruding axle-hub make both of these uses seem unlikely. My guess is that it is one of four wheels from a small cult wagon of the sort found at Strettweg (Austria), Merida (Spain) and Dupljaja (Serbia). The asymmetrical spacing of the spokes indicates that this wheel is Celtic, not Roman.”

. Copper alloy, 8.37 grams; 41.69 mm. Circa 50 B.C. - 50 A.D. It has an openwork triangular stitching loop, on the end is a rectangle with three lozenges showing the remains of blue enamel, above is a hemispherical circle with an enameled cross in the centre. Very Fine condition.

. Copper alloy, 37.40 grams; 33.86 mm. Circa 1st Century B.C. -1st Century A.D. The handle from a once elaborate, ceremonial bucket. It is in the form of a lug with an emerging beast with a curled body, head and three legs with globular terminals. Very Fine and Rare.

The eye is slightly faceted along its width, behind are two studs for mounting. Pre depositional chip otherwise Very Fine condition.

Copper alloy, 16.27 grams, 40.15 mm. Circa 50 B.C. - 50 A.D. A very unusual eye-shaped toggle fastener with a protruding loop underneath which would have been attached to a piece of clothing. The eye has raised fins either side would have received the loop to fasten the two sides together, giving the piece the look of a Wing nut! Good Very Fine condition.

Copper alloy, 16.27 grams, 40.15 mm. Circa 50 B.C. - 50 A.D. A very unusual eye-shaped toggle fastener with a protruding loop underneath which would have been attached to a piece of clothing. The eye has raised fins either side would have received the loop to fasten the two sides together, giving the piece the look of a Wing nut! Good Very Fine condition.
