'Charles I'
Period Decorated Bodkin.
Silver, 7.90 grams; 118.43 mm. Circa 1640 A.D. A beautiful example of a weaver's long bodkin used to make cloth in the weaving process. The head looped/hooked and has openwork with incised decoration on both sides. The Reigning Monarch, Charles I, was born in 1600. He was the second son of James I and Anne of Denmark. After several unsuccessful attempts at arranging a marriage, Charles married the 15 year-old daughter of France's King Henry IV, Henrietta Maria. After much civil unrest, Charles raised his standard against Parliamentary forces at Nottingham in 1642. Religious and economic issues added to the differences between the supporters of the monarchy (Cavaliers) and the supporters of Parliament (Roundheads). Charles I was forced to surrender to Scottish forces, was handed over to Oliver Cromwell , and was executed for treason in 1649.
This high status fascinating Bodkin is in Very Fine condition, having been left as found and unstraightened.
Ex. Karl Draper collection.

George III
'Hate Graffiti'
English Cartwheel Penny
. Bronze, 24.95 grams, 35.85 mm. A 1797 Soho mint cartwheel penny with contemporary hate graffiti. The obverse shows the king being hanged with gallows around the bust, a noose hanging around his neck; with his nose being cut (Nose cut off to spite his face). On the reverse is Britannia with a hangman’s noose around her neck and a sword sticking out from her chest, either side are the Initials W W with ELLIS stamped above. Possibly in memory of W.W. Ellis. The surface of the coin is worn as presumably it has been rubbed as a token of hate by a relative or close friend. George III was popular in England amongst most people but was deemed a tyrant by families of the victims of the capital punishment he enthusiastically promoted.
An intriguing and excessively rare item of historic interest
. This coin featured in a recent article in Treasure Hunting Magazine.

'Leaping Stag'
Polychrome Tile
Glazed Pottery, 570 grams, 128.46 mm. Circa 1650 A.D. A nice delft polychrome tile, this type of tile went into production in the early 17th Century when the Dutch East India company imported chinese porcelain in the early 1600s. Chinese workmanship and attention to detail impressed many. Only the richest could afford these early imports. Although Dutch potters did not immediately imitate Chinese porcelain, they began to do after the death of the Emperor Wan-Li in 1619, when the supply to Europe was interrupted. Delftware inspired by Chinese originals persisted from about 1630 to the mid-eighteenth century alongside European patterns. This example has the brilliant cobalt blue border around a central yellow lozenge. Inside is a depiction of a stag leaping a fence. Very Fine condition.
