Ancient Pottery For Sale

Pottery accounts for a large part of the archaeological record of ancient civilisations. It is believed that the earliest pottery wares were hand-built and fired in bonfires. The earliest known ceramic objects are Gravettian figurines such as those discovered at Dolni Vestonice in the modern day Czech Republic. These Venus figurines of a nude female figure date to 29,000 - 25,000 B.C.

Canaan is an ancient term for a region roughly corresponding to present-day Israel/Palestine including the West Bank, western Jordan, southern and coastal Syria and Lebanon continuing up to the border of modern Turkey. Various Canaanite sites have been excavated by archaeologists, most notably the Canaanite town of Ugarit, which was rediscovered in 1928. Much of our modern knowledge about the Canaanites stems from excavation in this area. Canaanite religion was the group of belief systems utilised by the people living in the ancient Levant throughout the Bronze Age and Iron Age. They were influenced strongly by Mesopotamian religious practices, Canaanite religious beliefs were polytheistic, with families typically focusing worship on household gods while acknowledging the existence of other deities such as Baal and El. Kings were also revered as gods.

Ancient Pottery~
How Pottery Evolved

The invention of the potter's wheel in Mesopotamia sometime between 6,000 and 4,000 B.C. revolutionised pottery production. Specialised potters were then able to meet the expanding needs of the world's first cities. Pottery was in use in ancient India during the Mehrgarh Period II (5500 - 4800 B.C.) and Merhgarh Period III (4800 - 3500 B.C.), known as the ceramic Neolithic and chalcolithic. Pottery, including items known as the ed-Dur vessels, originated in regions of the Indus valley and has been found in a number of sites in the Indus valley civilization.
