The Vikings refers to the Nordic people, Danes, Swedes and Norwegians who sometimes sailed out of Scandinavia in hundreds of longboats to loot and pillage coastal cities. The main offensive weapons used during the Viking period were the spear, sword and battle-axes. These weapons were carried not just for battle, but also as symbols of status and wealth. The Viking battle axe was inherited from the Frank's wars with the Romans and remained an ever-present Viking weapon. SOLD

"The Viking God Odin was the old and wise chieftain of all of the Viking Gods. Over time the Gods grew weary of living with the giants in Ginnungagap. Odin and his brothers decided to build a better world. Building material was needed for this new world and so Ymer was slain and ground between two great millstones. The earth was fashioned from his flesh; from his blood the sea and the crags from his bones. The vault of heaven was formed from his skull, and from his brains were all harsh storm clouds created. Four dwarfs were set to bear the vault of heaven, one in each direction of the wind. Earth was given a place at the centre of the World Tree and is called Midgard (Middle Earth). The golden woods of the Gods were set in the crown of the ash and to ward off the giants, a high wall surrounded all of Asgard. Upon Yggdrasil's three roots lies the netherworld with its springs. Each day the Gods ride over the colourful bridge Bifrost to rule over the rights and wrongs of the world. The land of the dead, Hell, is covered in mist. Last the Gods created two humans, Ask and Embla, and gave them Midgard to dwell in. Those giants who had survived the flood of Ymer's blood were forced to live in Utgard at the edge of the world."

The Vikings not only inhabited Scandinavia, Britain and Ireland. Vikings ships sailed into the Gulf of Finland and up the river Neva to the huge Lake Ladoga and on to the mouth of the river Volkhov. The settlement at Aldeigjuborg is known today as Staraia (Old) Ladoga. Finds from this area indicate a Scandinavian presence from as early as 750 AD, and herald a significant chapter in Viking history: journeys of discovery, trade ( slaves, amber, furs, Gyr Falcons ) and colonisation to the east and the south to Gårdarike, Miklagård and Särkland - the Nordic names for Russia, Constantinople and the Muslim Caliphate. This ancient armlet is from this area.

In Norse mythology, Sleipnir is Odin's magical eight-legged steed, and the greatest of all horses. He is referred to have 8 legs. His name means smooth or gliding, and is related to the English word "slippery". It has been suggested that Sleipnir having eight legs is symbolic of the four men who carry a coffin, i.e. a steed to carry the rider into the underworld. SOLD
